How to Blow up your Backyard?

How To Blow Up Your Backyard, Dr Karl, Ig Nobel Awards, And A New Gas Cooker

First, let’s understand the Ig Nobel Award. It honours achievements that make people laugh and think.

Our Aussie, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, all-knowing king of all things science, with an asteroid named after him, won an Ig Nobel award in 2002 for his research into belly button lint.

An actual Nobel Prize laureate presents the Ig Nobel award at a ceremony. Now that we understand the Ig Nobel awards let me introduce you to Cesar Schmitz from Enéas Marques, South Brazil. Cesar must receive the Ig Nobel award for how not to remove cockroaches from your backyard.

Cesar’s wife disliked cockroaches and asked her husband to destroy their nest in the backyard. Cesar tried a beetle spray, which drove the roaches above ground. He poured gasoline into the burrow and lobbed a lit match into the hole while his dogs watched from nearby.

Guess what happened next? They didn’t know what was in store for them. There was a spectacular explosion with flames and soil flying through the air.

You’ll be relieved to know that the dogs are ok. Although it won’t be an easy clean, and no one will surely want to go anywhere near gas ovens, gas burners, or a stainless steel fan grill, and more so if it’s double burner stoves or anything that could explode. Even the sight of an electric oven, cast iron, or camping stove during a camping trip will probably be ringing alarm bells in their heads that remind them of this accident. Forget about camping stoves and cooking succulent roasts, huh?

You might wonder what blowing up your backyard, Dr. Karl, the Ig Nobel awards, and a new gas cooker have in common.

The answer is hydrocarbons, a compound of hydrogen and carbon. These are the chief components of petroleum and natural gas, which fuels gas ovens, stoves, and burners.

Gas work undertaken by untrained handymen and unlicensed tradespeople can cause explosions, property damage and, worst-case scenario, even kill. You won’t know what’s in store without the proper license and knowledge if you try working on faulty gas ovens and camping stoves, such as installing or fixing your gas oven with a separate fan grill and other gas cooking technology or gas-supplied appliances. You shouldn’t even be touching our gas oven or gas stove (aside from cooking) when you don’t know anything, even if they aren’t gas ovens but electric ovens or hot plates. Even Bunnings stopped selling gas plumbing products in stores to the public due to the danger to homeowners.

The danger with gas is that gas leaks are not visible and can go undetected for some time, unlike a water leak.

In 2019, a home in Christchurch, N.Z., was utterly destroyed. Six people were injured, and dozens of nearby homes were evacuated after a gas explosion at the property. The cause of the blast is still undetermined.
